Ellenvale Junior High

April 24th, 2019

We acknowledge that we are in Mi’kma’ki, which is the traditional ancestral territory of the Mi’kmaq people.
From Mr. Fraser:
Wednesday - Lunch - Jazz Band Rehearsal
Thursday - Lunch - Grade 8 Band Rehearsal
Friday - lunch - Grade 7 Band Rehearsal
The Grade 8/9 Band Trip to Fredericton, NB will be May 7-9. Statements of amounts owing have been sent. Final amounts are now due.
There will be a parent information session for the Fredericton Trip on Tuesday, April 30 at 6:30 pm in the Ellenvale Band Room.

From Mr. Lewis:
Today is purple shirt day here at Ellenvale in memory of a former student, Hailey MacDonald.

Also -- Health and safety announcement reminder regarding lunch time indoors:  Absolutely no admission to students by other students at doors to school. Many students opened doors during indoor lunch today and this then opens the possibility of unwelcome intruders putting the entire population at risk at this time.

From Mr. Carruthers:
Our bathrooms are prepped and are ready for Dream Candy and their artists to come and “Deck the Stalls” this Sunday, April 28.

From Ms. Jackson:
The library is running a spine poetry contest for the month of April. Photos can be posted to twitter @ EllenvaleJrHigh or upload to google drive teresa.jackson@hrce.ca
Rules are listed on posters in the library. All entries are due today. Please include your name and class. Good luck!

From Ms. Doucette:
Are you a female grade 9 student? Do you want to be empowered and have the opportunity to explore careers in science, trades and technology with woman role models? If you want to be one of the female grade 9 students that attend the Techsploration event in May, please come to Ms. Doucette's room (216) at the first lunch bell today.

From 905 Homeless Advocates:
Did you know that 1 in 7 Canadians live in poverty and that every year a 150,000 have to stay in an emergency shelter? Today our Grade 9 Civics group is hoping to make a difference by asking you to help us collect a few items to donate to shelters and make care packages with. Please bring them to Room 215 by May 1. We would love cash donations or: Band-Aids, non-perishable food items/snacks, toiletries like small soaps, toothbrushes, toothpaste, sunscreen, creams, feminine hygiene products, deodorant, reusable water bottle and reusable fabric bags. Thank you for listening and we hope you will consider helping out.

From the Dartmouth Poverty Group:
There will be a bake sale to support Margaret's House and Feed Nova Scotia at lunchtime on Friday in the foyer. Bring some money and help those in need in Dartmouth.

From Ms. Legge:
There will be a mandatory Duke of Ed Meeting today. We will be using the entire lunch. Be prepared to be outside even if it is raining. We are working on Route Cards for our Practice Hike.

Also: Our Duke of Ed participants are preparing for their Practice Hike and Qualifying Journey. We are reaching out to the Ellenvale community as we are in need of 10-12 hiking backpacks (with around a 50 L or more capacity). If you have one you are willing to lend us from May 1st until June 10th, please send it into the school, well labeled, to Ms. Legge. She can be reached at klegge@hrce.ca if you have any questions. Thanks in advance for your help.

Finally from Ms. Legge: All Aboriginal students interested in a Mini-University Camp in May or a Junior University Health Sciences Camp this summer should see Ms. Legge ASAP and get an application.

From Ms. Carter:
Looking to work on your aerobic fitness for spring and summer? Want to start running or training for a spring race like the Bluenose marathon? Come out and run with Ms. Carter on Wednesdays at lunch, starting at 12pm. All students are welcome, no experience necessary. Bring appropriate running clothing (sneakers and gym gear) and meet in the front lobby. Runs go rain or shine, so be prepared! There will sign up sheet outside the gym doors!

From Mrs. Cottingham:
The D’nD club meeting today is cancelled.
