Empowering the Next Generation of Emergency Service Heroes
Despite females and gender-diverse individuals making up over 50% of the population, their representation in emergency services remains alarmingly low: only 11% in firefighting, 21% in the RCMP, 22% in Sheriffs, 23% in police, 24% in the Coast Guard, 35% in paramedics, 35% in corrections, and 40% in the Canada Border Services Agency. Camp Courage is on a mission to change that. Our comprehensive, barrier-free program equips female and gender-diverse youths aged 15 to 19 with essential skills, knowledge, and inspiration to pursue rewarding careers in emergency services.
Camp Courage 2025 will be held from June 28th to July 6th, with the application deadline on February 15th. Applicants are encouraged to submit their applications early to secure their chance at this transformative experience.
Kindling Interest, Building Leaders
Camp Courage kindles interest among underrepresented youth by engaging, educating, and empowering them within an ultra-nurturing environment. The award-winning program is guided by over 100 professionals from more than a dozen diverse emergency service agencies, ensuring participants receive top-tier mentorship and training.
Real-World Training, Real Impact
Participants engage in hands-on activities ranging from de-escalation and self-defence techniques to crime scene investigation, firefighting, search and rescue on land and water, critical medical simulations like airway management and simulated childbirth, as well as, resilience training and fitness regimens. These activities mentally and physically develop participants, preparing them to succeed in emergency service careers and life.
Graduates can apply for educational bursaries and access our mentorship program, which supports them through extensive emergency service application processes, including aptitude tests, fitness exams, and interviews.
Catalysts for Change in Their Communities
Camp Courage's unique application process is rooted in action, not tuition fees. Applicants must propose concrete ways they plan to improve their community or impact others' lives, supported by two letters of recommendation. Selected participants then turn those plans into reality, making meaningful contributions before graduating.
The results speak for themselves: 36% of Camp Courage graduates are now actively involved in emergency services. Graduates win bursaries, earn top honours, break barriers, and assume leadership roles. Many describe their experience as the best of their lives, returning to Camp Courage as mentors, board members, and leaders.
A Growing National and International Movement
Camp Courage continues to expand, with camps in Alberta, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. Interest is growing across Canada and globally, with places like British Columbia and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service exploring the possibility of launching their own Camp Courage programs.
Investing in Future Leaders
Camp Courage is about more than just skills—it's about instilling confidence, promoting values, enhancing emergency services, and building stronger communities. By investing in the next generation, we ensure a more diverse, prepared future.
