• Today is the first day of African Heritage Month. Please check out our website for links to the Black Cultural Centre and information for the celebration of this month. Each day we will read a quick bio of an influential African Nova Scotian person.
• Clarence Bodden, from Yarmouth, was the first ANS member of the RCMP in 1970 and the second black member in Canada. At 13 he was a member of the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets and by 18 his rank had risen to chief petty officer, which is the highest non-commissioned rank available. He wanted to follow his father’s footsteps into the Navy, but ended up choosing the RCMP instead. In 1995, he was awarded his twenty-five year service Bronze Star.  This occurred at a special ceremony, at the Black Cultural Centre in Cherry Brook, called Operation Show and Tell which recognized the positive contributions of African Nova Scotians. In 2008, Cpl Bodden retired from the RCMP after 38 years of service.
