We acknowledge that we are in Mi’kma’ki, which is the traditional unceded ancestral territory of the Mi’kmaq people.

We also acknowledge that people of African ancestry have been in Nova Scotia for over 400 years.

General Announcements

  • Remember that your coats, vests, backpacks, smart watches, ear buds and cell phones should be put in your lockers each morning. These items are not allowed in classrooms.

  • The Mi’kmaw Literally Shaped Modern Hockey. Before the NHL, or even factory-made sports equipment, the Mi'kmaq were the undisputed kings of hockey sticks. The Gold Standard: In the 1800s and early 1900s, if you were a serious hockey player in Canada or the US, you had to use a "Mic-Mac" hockey stick. They were hand-carved out of a single piece of wood using the root and trunk of hornbeam or yellow birch trees, making them incredibly durable and lightweight. Mi'kmaw craftsmen supplied virtually all of Canada's hockey sticks until mass production took over in the 1930s. In 2006, a single hand-carved Mi'kmaw hockey stick from the 1850s sold at an auction for a staggering $2.2 million!
