Today for AHM we recognize Mathieu da Costa. He was an Afro-French member of the French exploring parties that travelled from France to the New World in the early 17th century. He was the first recorded free black person to arrive on the territory of today's Canada. He spoke five languages and served as an interpreter between the French and the Mi’kmaq. For over 400 years many Black communities have come to Canada from all over the world.
