Today we recognize James Robinson Johnston, he was the first Black lawyer in Nova Scotia. He graduated from Dalhousie University Law School in 1898, and was called to the Nova Scotian bar in 1900. He became a prominent Halifax lawyer and a tireless advocate for Black rights. The James R. Johnston Chair in Black Canadian Studies, at Dalhousie University, is named after him.
