Today we recognize Rose Fortune, in 1825 she became Canada’s first black policewoman, entrusted to keep order on the Annapolis Royal Wharf. She beat the odds every time when up against racism, misogyny and poverty and became a legend not only in NS but throughout Canada. In 1987 Rose’s great-great-great-granddaughter, Daurene Lewis was elected mayor of Annapolis Royal, becoming the first black woman mayor in Canada and the first African Nova Scotian in this province.
The 2026 Chinese Lunar New Year begins on February 17, 2026, and marks the Year of the Fire Horse. As the seventh animal in the Chinese zodiac, the horse symbolizes energy, speed, independence, and intelligence. This year is expected to be characterized by rapid progress, bold action, and high energy.
