October is Mi’kmaq History Month. The purpose is to promote public awareness about the Mi’kmaq culture and heritage to the people of Nova Scotia. Take a look around the school to see the Mi'kmaq History Month poster.
1. Spirit week was a great success last week with the following homerooms winning pizza parties:  Congratulations to all classes for your efforts - Tied for 1st place for all grades and all homerooms was 701 and 702 with participation points at 71% for the week.  Honourable mention goes to 706 at 63 points and 703 and 704 at 41 and 40 points – well done all!  In 1st place for Grade 8 was 805 and Homeroom 904 took first place in Grade 9. 
2. SOAR tickets - This week homerooms can continue to accumulate class participation points for SOAR Awards.  SOAR means respecting S-elf, O-thers, A-cademics, and R-esponsibility.  Students who are working hard to achieve their personal best in respecting and caring for Self, Others, Academics, and Responsible behaviour, may receive a SOAR ticket from any staff member.  Make sure your name is on the ticket with your homeroom number and drop it in the blue SOAR box at the main office.  At the end of the week we will count homeroom points AND we will have a draw for individual student prizes including movie passes and more.
3. Fire Drill #2 - This week will be FIRE DRILL #2 and the drill will not be announced.  Students please be ready to go to your classroom line-up in the Garden area in an orderly manner and see if we can correctly identify any students or staff who are missing from our line-ups outside.

Tuesday, October 20, Grade 7 Immunizations – Gymnasium

Parents/Guardians:
As we approach midway through first term, we invite you to review your student’s assessment information in PowerSchool. There is valuable information in PowerSchool for you--attendance information (classes missed, lates, etc.) as well as student assessment results. If you are unable to access PowerSchool Parent Portal, email Mrs. Cottingham (jcottingham@hrce.ca), for assistance.

Also, Pita Pit has cancelled the order for student lunches on Tuesday, Oct. 20 (tomorrow) because there were only 7 orders and they require a minimum order of 15. Healthy Hunger will be issuing refunds and you should be getting a message from them as well.
